DETROIT (FIBA Americas Championship) - Detroit Pistons power forward Charlie Villanueva hopes Cholet star Sammy Mejia plays with him and the Dominican Republic this summer at the FIBA Americas Championship in Argentina.Mejia, who was born in the Bronx, New York, but has Dominican Republic nationality, was named Euroleague Player of the Week after scoring 29 points in the French side’s 82-78 win over previously unbeaten Fenerbahce Ulker. The Dominicans will attempt to qualify for the London 2012 Games next summer when the FIBA Americas Championship is played in Mar del Plata.Villanueva said to FIBA via his Twitter account CV31: “Sammy Mejia is a very talented guard. Tell Sammy he needs to come play for us, Dominican Republic team, this summer in Argentina.”Two places for the Olympics will be up for grabs in Argentina, and the United States won’t take one of them since they qualified for London by winning the world title this summer in Turkey. The Dominican Republic could put an extremely good team on the floor.Villanueva, Sacramento guard Francisco Garcia and Atlanta Hawks center Al Horford were among those that played at the 2009 FIBA Americas Championship in Puerto Rico.Competition for Olympic spots will be fierce, however, with Argentina’s Manu Ginobili, Carlos Delfino, Luis Scola and Pablo Prigioni expected to play and Tiago Splitter, Anderson Varejao and Marcelo Huertas among those in a very talented Brazil team.Canada and Puerto Rico will also be looking to bounce back from disappointing results at the FIBA World Championship in Turkey.
