6'10" senior Josh Gomez reached rare numbers at the 30th Annual Beach Ball Classic in leading Rice (Manhattan, NY) to a 62-58 victory over Gonzaga (Washington, D.C.).
With the win, the Raiders (6-1) advance to the fifth place game.
Gomez recorded the second most blocks in a BBC contest with 11, falling five short of Rasheed Wallace's 16. Wallace set the record while a senior at Simon Gratz (Philadelphia, PA) and playing against Socastee (Myrtle Beach, SC) in the opening round of the 1991 Beach Ball Classic.
Gomez also recorded 18 points and 10 rebounds to post a very rare triple-double in the BBC. While records are incomplete, there have been fewer than five triple-doubles in the previous 29 years of the BBC.
As for the game action, Rice led a majority of the game and took the lead for good at 44-42 with 8:33 to play on Emmanuel Andujar's 12-foot jumper. The jumper started a 13-2 run by the Raiders that opened a 55-44 advantage with just 2:26 to play. The final margin was closed in the final second as Nate Britt was fouled and connected on three free throws.
Britt led Gonzaga (7-4) with 24 points.
